The Ministry of Defence of Somaliland urgently extends its message to the international community and regional governments concerning the ongoing conflict in Las Anod. We would like to inform you that the conflict was initially sparked by a bold, pre-planned, and premeditated attack carried out by a terrorist organization and a clan-affiliated militia on February 6. The primary objective of this attack was to destabilize Somaliland and undermine its authority in Las Anod, with the potential for the conflict to spread to neighbouring countries.
The coalition, referred to as the "axis of evil," comprising the terrorist organization, militias, and the regional state of Puntland, has consistently planned and executed actions that endanger innocent civilians. In response, the Somaliland forces have demonstrated utmost restraint and adherence to international humanitarian law.
Despite the challenges we face, Somaliland remains steadfast in its commitment to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict and restore stability in the region. Given the forced displacement of Las Anod residents by militias and terrorists, we have taken measures to provide medical and food aid to those affected. Additionally, we have proactively engaged international NGOs, urging them to assist our displaced citizens who have been deliberately uprooted by this malevolent alliance. As part of our efforts, we have also decided to provide education to the displaced individuals, offering educational opportunities within the villages or at the internal displacement camps.
In December 2022, a young Somaliland politician tragically fell victim to an assassination by a terrorist organization and several militias operating in Las Anod. This incident sparked widespread protests within the city, with traditional leaders and militias urging residents of Las Anod to evacuate the city and launch attacks against the Somaliland army.
On February 6th, a delegation of Somaliland Ministers, including the Minister of Interior, Minister of Defence, Minister of Information, Minister of Transportation, and Minister of Agriculture, visited the city to address the community's concerns and engage with local elders. However, while they were at the residence in Las Anod, they were unexpectedly attacked by the Las Anod militias and members of the terrorist group.
We urgently call upon the international community to provide support to Somaliland and prevent future attacks on Western and Middle Eastern interests in the region. The Ministry of Defence of Somaliland reaffirms its commitment to peace, stability, and the protection of its citizens. We appeal to the international community to stand alongside Somaliland in its efforts to combat terrorism, ensure accountabilities for all involved parties, and restore peace and stability in the region.
